If youâre heading to Southern California, Newport Beach is one of the best coastal spots. While the city has plenty of sights and sounds, Balboa Island is one of the top destinations. Even though the island is relatively small, itâs packed with things to do. In fact, you could spend the entire weekend there and never get bored.
So, with that in mind, letâs look at some fun things to do on this island getaway.
Take the Balboa Island Ferry

First of all, parking is pretty limited on the island itself. Realistically, if youâre trying to drive up the Pacific Coast Highway and park on Balboa Island, you need to arrive pretty early. Not only do the streets and parking lots fill up with tourists, but many people live on the island too. Spring and summer are the busiest times to visit, so one way to avoid the parking hassle is to take the ferry. Since 1919, this ferry has shuttled people, equipment, and vehicles across the water.
You can board the ferry on Balboa Peninsula, directly across from the island. Doing this allows you to see more of the ocean and experience the fun of Balboa Island from a different perspective. Best of all, the ferry runs from 6:30 am to 12 am, so you donât have to worry about missing the boat because youâre having too much fun.
Visit the Balboa Fun Zone

Technically speaking, the Balboa Fun Zone is not on the island itself, but itâs next to the ferry stop, so we will count it. This amusement park has been around since 1937, delighting residents and tourists alike. There arenât too many rides here, but you have to go on the Ferris Wheel during your trip. The wheel offers some of the best views of the island, the peninsula, and the Pacific Ocean. On a really clear day, you can even spot Catalina Island out in the water.
The Fun Zone is one of several places offering boat rentals. So, if you want to hit the water in style, you can spend a couple of hours exploring the area at your leisure.
The amusement park is open seven days a week, but it closes daily at 5 pm, so plan accordingly. The relatively early closing time means you should be able to partake in other activities, such as walking the pier or eating at one of the many area restaurants.
Rent a Duffy Boat

The best way to experience Balboa Island and the surrounding water is on the back of a Duffy Boat. This boat is unique to the area, and it offers an excellent way to explore the ocean, see some marine life, and enjoy yourself without breaking the bank.
These boats were invented by a teenager named Marshall âDuffyâ Duffield. He combined a golf cart motor with a day boat, and the rest is history. You can rent one of these boats for the day and sip champagne with your friends as you watch the sunset. Duffy boats are perfect for lounging, exploring, or just showing off to the rest of the world. Plus, you can use the boat to head to other water activities, such as swimming, fishing, and kayaking.
Go Whale Watching
If youâre trying to see marine life up close during your trip to Balboa Island, you canât do much better than whale watching. When whale season hits, you can witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
One of the best whale watching companies on the island is East Meets West, and theyâre so good because they have so much respect for the animals. Also, their boats are much more comfortable and accommodating than other tours in the area. Plus, each boat only carries six passengers, so you get an intimate experience with just your friends or family on board (if you prefer).
In addition to several whale species, youâll discover dolphins, seals, and sea lions during the two-hour tour. With tours booking throughout the year, youâre sure to see something incredible on your trip. Just be aware of the busy season, as spots can go remarkably fast.
Eat a Frozen Banana at Sugar ân Spice

In the show Arrested Development, the Bluth family lives in Newport Beach and has a frozen banana stand on Balboa Island. While the stand is played for laughs on the show, itâs based on a real thing you can experience. There are actually two world-famous spots known for their bananas: Dadâs Donut and Bakery Shop and Sugar ân Spice. Fortunately, theyâre just a block away from each other, so you can sample both and decide which one is best.
According to Sugar ân Spice, theyâre the original frozen banana stand, dating back to 1945. The dip flavors include traditional chocolate, non-dairy chocolate, dark chocolate, peanut butter, and cherry. You can also roll your banana in the toppings of your choice, including sprinkles, nuts, and cookie crumbles. This delicious treat is the perfect way to end your day on the island, especially during the summer. However, be aware that you might have to face some intense lines and wait times.
Rent a Kayak or Paddleboard

While thereâs something special about seeing the water from a Duffy Boat, theyâre not quite as scenic as kayaks or paddle boards. If you like the idea of hitting the water in a self-powered boat, be sure to take advantage of the many rental locations on the island and the peninsula. One of our favorite companies is Balboa Fun Tours and Rentals, but many options are available.
Once youâre done on the water, be sure to rent a bicycle to explore the island and the surrounding areas. Not only can you get a good workout, but youâll save time and money on parking.
Indulge Your Sweet Tooth at Balboa Candy

If a frozen banana isnât enough sugar for your trip, you can also buy some sweet treats at Balboa Candy. This shop is unique because it offers a wide array of classic and vintage candy options. If youâre undecided, you can pick between:
- Handmade saltwater taffy (over 70 flavors!)
- Contemporary and vintage gummy candies
- Gum and mints
- Jellybeans (tons of flavors available)
- Massive jawbreakers
- Lollipops and suckers
And even international candy. Basically, you can find anything with sugar as the first ingredient. If you prefer pastries, cakes, and baked goods, be sure to check out the Balboa Island Baking Company as well.
Eat Lunch or Dinner at Wilmaâs Patio
One of the best things about Balboa Island is that everything feels unique and authentic to the location. You wonât find endless rows of corporate chains and franchises here. Instead, youâll see shops and restaurants owned by locals who have a passion for their field and show it in each product or dish.
Wilmaâs Patio is an excellent example of this authenticity on display. The restaurant looks like someoneâs house, giving it that warm and welcoming vibe. The menu further enhances the atmosphere by bringing you homestyle favorites like:
- Egg Scrambles and Omelets for Breakfast
- Clam Chowder and Fish and Chips for Lunch
- Fish Sandwiches or Scratch-Made Burgers for Dinner
Wilmaâs also specializes in Mexican fare for all three meals. You can have some Mexican-style eggs in the morning, crab enchiladas for lunch, and carne asada for dinner. The place also serves fresh-caught fish like salmon, mahi-mahi, and Pacific cod.
Stroll Down Marine Ave
Most of Balboa Island is residential real estate, so youâll find row after row of houses and townhomes. However, the best place to be for all the action is Marine avenue. This one street houses practically all the shops and restaurants on the island, so you can spend most of your day here.
As far as boutiques go, you can start your journey at Shirleyâs Heart at the north end of the strip. This shop offers decor and artwork that will make your home feel more inviting. Next, you can buy some coastal pieces at Sur la Mer and then purchase some seasonings at Olive Oil and Beyond. Finally, at the end of the strip, you can get some clothes for your little ones at Magnolia Charlie. Along the way, check out some of the eateries, including those weâve mentioned already.
Learn About Balboa Islandâs History

For such a small piece of land, Balboa Island has had quite a life. Originally, the island was little more than a sandbar, barely worth the time and effort to remove. However, one developer tried to do that to make the harbor more accommodating to shipping vessels. Fortunately, his plans sank (pun intended), and another developer saw gold in the sand.
By the 1920s, investments came to the island, and it became a community. During this decade, vital infrastructure came online, such as plumbing, electricity, and housing. Over the years, Balboa Island has transformed into a major tourist attraction, popular with beachgoers of all ages, particularly during Spring break and summer.
You can learn more about the islandâs history by visiting the Balboa Island Museum on Marine Ave. The museum hosts events and has many interactive exhibits to make the past come alive.
Eat at the Village Inn
With so many restaurants on Balboa Island, itâs hard to pick the top options for tourists. However, at the southern tip of Marine Avenue sits The Village Inn. If youâre interested in fine dining in a casual, laid-back atmosphere, this restaurant is for you.
The Village Inn started way back in 1933, making it an island institution. Many people make this place part of their vacation, thanks to the delicious dishes, the timeless quality of the building, and the proximity to everything else the island has to offer.
When it comes to food, you can find some exquisite dishes, such as braised short ribs, shrimp scampi capellini, and the Innâs signature gourmet burger. Since itâs so close to the water, you can also sample some traditional favorites like blackened shrimp, clam chowder, and a salmon sandwich.
Turn Into a Mermaid at Once Upon an Island
If youâre bringing little girls to Balboa Island, you may need to take them to Once Upon an Island. If there’s one thing that little girls love, itâs mermaids. Now, your child can turn themselves into a real-life mermaid, complete with the outfit and training on how to swim and lounge on the beach.
Mermaid classes happen regularly, and the venue also works well for birthday parties and other celebrations. This venue also hosts princesses for the one-two punch of everything a little girl could want or ask for.
As you can see, Balboa Island has lots to offer, so plan your vacation accordingly. Whether youâre here for two days or two weeks, youâre sure to find something to keep you entertained (and full). Enjoy your stay!
